Description
This wonderful old Italian specialty onion is originally from Tropea, the Calabrian town in Italy known for its superb cuisine. Lunga di Firenzi is what the Red Torpedo Tropea onions are called in Tropea. When pulled as baby onions, just as the stems start to swell, their beautiful, bright, magenta color, mild flavor, and crunchy texture work well in salads. When they bulb up, they have an elongated torpedo shape and develop a deep pungent flavor. Will require a slightly deeper planting (2″) and more moisture to keep the bottom of the onion from becoming flattened by tight soil. In Italy, they braid 5-6 onions together and tie them on a nail for display. Slicing the onion like a cucumber makes preparation easy.
